Style

With only subtle differences over the standard BMW 3-Series you will be forgiven for not getting overly excited when you first see the M3. But on closer inspection you start to see the upgrades that make this car a far superior model. From the carbon fibre roof to flared wheel arches and the four tailpipes at the rear, the BMW M3 starts to give you the impression that this car is hiding something special? It doesn’t stop there either, the distinctive wing mirrors add to the stance of the rear view mirror image and the chrome grille looks menacing, especially with the vertical slats. On the inside the interior gets upgraded over the standard 3-Series, but to get the interior to the highest level you need to pay for the upgrades. The Black carbon leather trim being the choice of many at only £335. The standard audio system is pretty average and again you need to pay to get the best, upto £1,435 if you want the best sounds BMW can offer. My only grievance is that when you pay over £50,000 for a car you would expect all this included, but with BMW M3 it’s not just about style, it’s about performance! So if you are at your limit buying the car and can’t afford a few extra comfort features, who cares, you are driving a car that most people only dream about, so sit back and enjoy!

Safety and Technology

When you have got a car that does 0-62 mph in under 5 seconds, you really want to feel safe should anything go wrong? Well it goes without saying the German manufacturers have done their homework. The M series has been in production for over 20 years, and each time they launch a new model, there has been significant modifications and improvements from the last time round. When it comes to the safety of their drivers, BMW don’t make you pay for upgrades. The BMW M3 comes with all the required safety equipment as standard. The car gets all round airbag protection, with drivers, front passenger and front side airbags as standard. The brakes couldn’t get any better. You get front and rear ventilated compound disc brakes, with the latest technology including  ABS, CBC and EBD. The suspension provides you with all round stability, benefiting from DSC and ASC, allowing you to get the most comfortable ride over varying road conditions. A nice little touch from BMW is the TPWS, the tyre puncture warning system, which proves quite handy if you are about to get a blowout at the limited 155mph?

Comfort/Economy

Even if you don’t opt for the optional upgrades inside the cabin, you still feel like you are surrounded by luxury equipment. The drivers seat, with it’s electric memory is delightful, as a pet hate of mine is the moments you get in your car after somebody else has been driving it. You spend hours finding your perfect driving position just to find that next time you get in, it’s just not right. Despite the wife saying she never moved the seat at all, you just know that she has been fiddling about with your seat. Well with the memory function, you are literally a switch away from restoring the driver’s position back to its original state. Tremendous, it saves many a domestic situation, well at least in my household. Once inside and behind the wheel, you can start to take in the many instruments and controls within your reach. Starting on the steering wheel you again have controls to adjust the column to your preferred levels using it’s manual reach and rake system. Also on the steering wheel you have your cruise control buttons to allow you to set, increase/decrease or reset your choice of cruising speed. Within the centre panel you have your audio equipment and various other functions like you air conditioning, which is automatic. But the main area that catches your eye is the M Instrument panel with it’s red illuminated needles and white display for the speedometer, the rev counter and the fuel and oil gauge. Combine all this with fine finishing touches like the door sill finishers with the famous BMW M3 designation and the individual anthracite headlining you get an all round feeling of comfort and luxury. As for the economy on the BMW M3, are you really that concerned? Well if you are you might be shocked to hear that you only get 22.8 mpg combined, but what else can you expect from the 3999cc engine? I would expect to get a lot less than 22.8 mpg as you feel when you are driving the M3 that it is a car that wants to be driven. So forget about the fuel efficiency, forgot about the emissions, just sit back relax and enjoy!
