If you are looking for a luxury roadster sports car then look no further than the BMW Z4. Its predecessor the BMW Z3 was a quality car in its own right, but every car can be improved, and in 2002 BMW started the production of the Z4 roadster. The BMW Z4 Roadster is highly recommended by all the motoring critics and with little competition other than the Audi TT, Honda S2000, Mercedes SLK and the Porsche Boxster, the Z4 rightly continues to do well in this area of the market.

Style

BMW customers were literally divided 50/50 when Chris Bangle started the overhaul of the BMW designs, starting with the Z4 in 2002. In an industry where any form of change isn’t welcomed with open arms, BMW were taking a huge risk with such a controversial change to there lineup. Well they needn’t have worried, the brand is as strong as ever and the customers who did move away soon came back with their tails between their legs, as the rest of the BMW lineup got redesigned by Chris and his team. By 2006 all the BMW range bore the same characteristics of the Z4, with its flame surfacing design and aggressive styling choices. So with The wind and sun on your skin, and the road just beneath you, you have the perfect conditions for your mission: to discover pure open-top driving pleasure in the BMW Z4 Roadster. This is a pure roadster, aesthetically perfect with absolute sporting intentions. The long bonnet, long wheelbase and the short overhangs give the Z4 classic roadster proportions with these unmistakably sporty lines.

Safety and Technology

Traction control is standard on all the range but the Z4’s stability systems intervene only at the limit, allowing dynamic handling characteristics to be retained. By also allowing powerful acceleration out of bends with its ideal enhancement of rear-wheel drive handling characteristics, you get maximum traction, and therefore maximum driving pleasure. Combined with its Lightweight Suspension you get man and machine in perfect harmony. Responsiveness, precision and control. The aluminium front suspension and five-link rear suspension gives for highly sporty handling. The car has also got a perfect 50:50 weight distribution and is rear-wheel drive. The springs are firm and with the dampers you get an authentic road feel and uncompromising dynamics. The latest generation Dynamic Stability Control gives you more comfort and cornering stability. The BMW Z4 comes equipped with electric power steering as standard, allowing for ultra precise steering manoeuvres. I’ve saved the best til last. Now everybody loves a convertible, but not everybody loves getting the hood down to get the wind through their hair, mainly because it is such a ball ache to do it, especially if the dark clouds descend and the heavens open when you least expect it? From start to finish this process takes 10 seconds on the BMW Z4, the quickest and most efficient you will find anywhere. Ask me to take the hood down on my classic Ford Escort Xr3i Cabriolet and I would ask you to come back in half an hour to see the results. This just shows you how far technology has come and BMW are at the forefront for this particular feature. Try the Z4’s competitors to notice the difference, it could potentially sway your decision as to which one you will buy?

Comfort/Economy

Sometimes you find on a two seater sports car that too much time and effort has gone into the performance and exterior looks of the car, and not enough into the actual look and feel inside the cabin. When you are out driving around the country lanes on a weekend, you want to feel comfortable. The Z3 was acceptable and that was about it. The Z4, with its much bigger platform allows for much more interior space. This gives the atmosphere inside the cabin a much better feel. From the seats to the instruments and steering column, everything just feels like it’s in the right place, whether you are 6ft 6 or 5ft 1. The rest of the interior is very BMW. You know it is quality and the look and feel of the fabrics and plastics reinforce this judgment. Obviously like all cars there are various options you can add to make your experience more comfortable, but the car is exceptional even at the entry level. However if your budget dictates, you can make some quality changes to the Z4 which just take the car to the next level. Like the 18” Star alloy wheels or professional navigation system or even cruise control? Why you would want cruise control I don’t know, the car is there to be driven, so drive it and enjoy it, I know I did!
